Syphilis meaning What is Syphilis It is a sexually transmitted disease STD. Syphilis is caused by Treponema Palladium, a bacteria which may enter the body by vaginal sex, anal sex, oral sex, body contact if open wounds present, from infected mother to her child, sharing infected needles etc.. syphilis test are performed to start the syphilis treatment if tests are positive. Syphilis symptoms are very nonspecific. There may be a small wound at contact site which is painless and is known as chancre (Primary syphilis). Syphilis symptoms can appear after 21 days of contact (10-90 days). Syphilis disease is a great pretender as it may mimic many diseases. Chancre lasts for 3-6 weeks and heal even without treatment.
In second stage skin rashes may present over body and vagina rectum mouth etc. Condyloma lata may also form. Patient may also has fever, swollen lymph nodes, sore throat, patchy hair loss, headaches, weight loss, muscle aches, fatigue. Symptoms will go with or without treatment. After this is latent stage and progresses to third stage with involvement of all major organs of body.
Syphilis test may be VDRL test full form (venereal disease research laboratory test), RPR (Rapid plasma reagin test) and more confirmatory tests are TPHA(T pallidum hemagglutination assay) and FTA-ABS (fluorescent treponemal antibody absorbed).
Syphilis treatment by Benzathine penicillin G 2.4 million units administered intramuscularly one injection to 3 shots. We may also give Tetracycline, Azithromycin and Doxycycline.
VDRL test reactive meaning it is positive. It may also come positive in lyme diseases, HIV AIDS, certain pneumonia, malaria, TB, SLE. We have to go for other tests for confirmation.
